I think I can imagine what am I going through.
Some people are quick to judge others. I have found this very upsetting myself. I think when you have the awkward moment , you just take longer to get used to new people and situations. Some people are so quick to file you away in their mental drawer that they don't even give you a chance to get used to them, they will just judge you as weird, unfriendly or whatever. But as a small comfort, I don't think that such judgmental people would make very good friends anyway.
